About the origin of the griffin
The Pisa Griffin has the head of an eagle, the ears of a horse, the wattle of a rooster, wings, and the body of the limbs and toes of lions and other mammals. Its statue is made of cast bronze. Its wings are individually cast and held in place by rivets. Its interior is mostly hollow. The Pisa Griffin is now located at the Museo dell’Opera del Duomo in Pisa. Given its elusive origins and multiple possible uses, including source or musical instrument, the Griffin seemed at first to be a historical anomaly. However, its likely origin can be approximated by comparing it with similar sculptures of the time, namely animal sculptures and fountains in the opulent settlements of Andalusia. In addition, griffins may have similar construction methods to Andalusian sources based on the metal content of their bronze alloys and thus originated from Andalusian sources.

A newer theory, based on the remains of their internal features, the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Pisa Griffin and a smaller lion, were designed to make noises from their mouths as a known mechanical toy.
